Here are some basic tips for common car problems aimed at those who are new to DIY car maintenance:
Flat Tires If you get a flat tire, don't panic. First, safely pull over to the side of the road. Locate your spare tire, jack, and lug wrench in the trunk. Follow your car's manual to properly lift the car and remove the flat tire. Replace it with the spare, ensuring the lug nuts are tightened securely. Remember to get your flat tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
Dead Battery
If your car won't start and you suspect it's a dead battery, try jump-starting it. You'll need jumper cables and another vehicle with a working battery. Connect the cables properly: red to positive terminals, black to negative terminals. Start the working car and let it run for a few minutes, then try starting your car. If it starts, let it run for a while to recharge the battery.
Engine Overheating
If your car's temperature gauge is in the red or you see steam coming from the engine, pull over immediately. Turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down before opening the hood. Check the coolant level (only when it's safe to do so) and top it off if necessary. If the coolant level is fine, there might be a more serious issue, so it's best to call for roadside assistance.
Check Engine Light
If your check engine light comes on, don't ignore it. While some issues may be minor, others could indicate more serious problems. Consider purchasing an OBD-II scanner, available at most auto parts stores, to diagnose the issue yourself. Alternatively, take your car to a trusted mechanic for a diagnostic check.

If you hear unusual noises coming from your car, such as squealing, grinding, or knocking, it's best not to ignore them. Try to identify where the sound is coming from and when it occurs (e.g., while braking, accelerating, turning). This information can help your mechanic diagnose the problem more accurately.
Fluid Leaks
If you notice fluid leaking from your car, it's important to address it promptly. Check the color and consistency of the fluid to determine what it might be (e.g., oil, coolant, transmission fluid). Low fluid levels can lead to serious damage, so top them off if needed and have your car inspected by a professional.
